Bitcoin Ordinals: art on the blockchain

In early 2023, people started writing art, text, and even games directly onto the Bitcoin blockchain. This is the plain words story of Ordinals: numbered satoshis, on chain art, the BRC-20 experiment, and the friendly debate about block space.

01Bitcoin coins have serial numbers

Each bitcoin holds 100 million satoshis, the smallest units of the network. In January 2023, developer Casey Rodarmor published ordinal theory: a simple system that numbers every satoshi in the order miners mint it. Satoshi number one was mined in January 2009. Satoshi number two followed. The count keeps climbing with every block.

Numbering changed what a satoshi can be. A numbered satoshi carries an identity, and an identified unit can carry data. That one idea opened Bitcoin to art, text, and even games, all written straight into the chain.

02Writing art into a satoshi

An inscription attaches data to a single satoshi. The data sits inside the witness part of a Bitcoin transaction, a corner of the block where Taproot, the November 2021 upgrade, made room for larger payloads. Images, text files, short videos, even playable games have all been inscribed.

The inscription travels with the satoshi. Send the satoshi to a friend and the art moves along. The data lives in the chain itself, so anyone running a node can read it directly. This permanence is the whole point: the work exists for as long as Bitcoin does.

03How inscriptions differ from NFTs elsewhere

Most NFTs on networks like Ethereum work by reference. A token sits on chain and points to art stored somewhere else, often on IPFS or a company server. The token is permanent, and the artwork stays available as long as that storage keeps serving the file.

Bitcoin inscriptions work by content. The art file itself goes into the chain data, so the token and the artwork travel as one package. Collectors call them digital artifacts, objects complete in themselves. There is elegance in it: everything needed to see the piece is already on chain.

04The BRC-20 experiment

In March 2023, a developer known as Domo showed that inscriptions could carry more than art. The BRC-20 standard writes simple JSON text onto satoshis to create and move fungible tokens, with ORDI as the first. Deploy, mint, transfer: three operations, all done through inscriptions.

It was framed as an experiment from day one, a lab for what Bitcoin data rails can do. The market answered anyway. People minted, traded, and built wallets and marketplaces within weeks. Fees rose as demand poured in, and miners welcomed the revenue. An idea born over a weekend became one of the liveliest corners of crypto.

05The block space debate, in friendly terms

Inscriptions share block space with payments, and that sparked a lively debate about what Bitcoin is for. When inscription demand peaked, fees climbed and everyday transfers cost more. Miners enjoyed record fee income. Others felt payments should come first.

The network handled it all with grace. Blocks kept arriving every ten minutes, the fee market priced every byte fairly, and the debate itself showed the system's openness: anyone can use the chain for anything, and miners follow the fees. Bitcoin absorbed a whole new use case and kept running exactly as designed.

06What it means for you

Collecting inscriptions is completely optional, and your bitcoin works the same either way. If curiosity wins, use a wallet that shows inscriptions clearly, since a regular wallet may treat an inscribed satoshi like spare change. Start with small amounts while you learn the ropes.

And remember the permanence. Anything you inscribe stays on chain for good, so check your file carefully before you commit. The ordinals movement turned Bitcoin into a canvas. Whether you paint on it or simply admire the gallery, the story belongs to you too.
