Nvidia Just Bought the Town Square of Open Source AI
Nvidia has agreed to acquire Hugging Face for 12.93 billion dollars, a deal that ranks among Nvidia's largest acquisitions ever, and the target is the closest thing the open source AI world has to a town square. The platform hosts more than three million models, half a million datasets, and a million applications, used by over 18 million developers and 200,000 organizations.
The structure, disclosed in Nvidia's filings, sends about 11.9 billion dollars to Hugging Face shareholders and sets aside up to 1 billion dollars in equity awards to keep employees on board. The deal is expected to close in the first half of 2027. Jensen Huang, Nvidia's chief executive, announced it personally, which tells you how much strategic weight sits behind it.
Huang's core promise: Hugging Face stays an open platform for the entire AI ecosystem. Developers keep choosing their models, their frameworks, their clouds, their inference providers, and their computing platforms. Nvidia compute will be an option, and the company says it will stay optional, with support continuing for rival hardware and multi accelerator deployment.
That promise matters because Hugging Face earned its influence by staying neutral ground. Backers include AMD, Intel, Amazon, and Google, all Nvidia rivals in one arena or another. Huang points to Nvidia's own open source record as evidence of good faith: more than 500 models and 250 open datasets the company has already released on the platform, plus its popular Nemotron family. Reuters notes demand for open weight models is surging as businesses push back on steep deployment bills, with labs like DeepSeek and Z.ai shipping models that match top American systems on tasks like code generation at lower cost.
Hugging Face chief executive Clem Delangue framed the sale as a growth move, saying the platform needs more compute, more support, more collaboration, and more visibility to bring open weights to a larger scale. Founded in 2016, the company had raised more than 395 million dollars, including a 235 million dollar round in 2023 led by Salesforce Ventures with Google, Amazon, IBM, and Nvidia participating.
What it means for you: the open model ecosystem just gained the richest possible patron, and the open platform pledge is now the commitment the whole industry will hold Nvidia to. If the pledge holds, developers get better infrastructure and faster access to open weights, and the open ecosystem grows stronger under serious capital. Open source won this round; the next round is watching the promise get kept.
