What are Layer 2s?

Layer 2 networks carry crypto's everyday traffic fast and cheap, then settle everything back to the main chain. This guide explains the express lanes of crypto in plain words: how they work, the big names, and how to use one.

01The highway and the express lanes

Picture a highway at rush hour. Ethereum's main chain is that highway: open to everyone, guarded by strong security, and priced by demand. Layer 2 networks are the express lanes built above it. They carry the everyday traffic fast and cheap, then settle everything back down to the main chain, where Ethereum's full security stands watch.

The main chain keeps running exactly as before. Nothing moves, nothing changes. The express lanes simply give daily activity a faster lane, and the main chain acts as the final referee for all of it.

02The main designs

Optimistic rollups bundle hundreds of transactions off chain, post the bundle to Ethereum, and give everyone a window to challenge any result that breaks the rules. Fraud proofs keep the system honest, and Ethereum's own records carry the receipts.

ZK rollups take a different route. They bundle transactions and attach a cryptographic proof that every one of them followed the rules. Ethereum checks the proof in seconds, so settlement arrives quickly. The math does the trusting.

State channels are private two way streets between people who transact often. Bitcoin's Lightning Network is the famous example: two parties open a channel, swap payments back and forth in an instant, and only the opening and the closing touch the main chain. It is the pocket cash model for digital money.

Sidechains are independent chains that run alongside the main one, connected by bridges. They move fast and keep fees tiny, with their own validator communities keeping the wheels turning.

03The big names

On Ethereum's side the rollup family leads the way. Arbitrum and Optimism pioneered the optimistic rollup model and now carry enormous everyday traffic. Base brought a huge exchange audience on chain through an Optimism powered rollup. Polygon runs a whole family of scaling options, from sidechains to ZK rollups. On Bitcoin, the Lightning Network carries instant small payments, the same express lane idea built for the oldest network.

Each network has its own personality, its own apps, and its own community. Exploring them feels like visiting different neighborhoods of the same city.

04Why fees are lighter and confirmations faster

The trick is batching. A rollup can bundle a thousand transactions into one package that Ethereum settles as a single unit. Everyone on the Layer 2 shares the cost of that one settlement, which is why fees land in the cents and confirmations arrive in seconds.

Speed follows from simpler rules. The main chain verifies every detail in full. The Layer 2 checks the bundle against clear rules and leans on the main chain for final settlement. Less work per transaction means faster blocks, lower fees, and room for millions of daily payments.

05How to use one

Your wallet already works. MetaMask, Coinbase Wallet, and most mobile wallets switch networks with one tap, and your address stays the same across Ethereum and its Layer 2s.

Moving coins onto a Layer 2 uses a bridge. You send coins to the bridge on the main chain and receive the matching balance on the Layer 2. The official bridges for Arbitrum, Optimism, and Base make the trip in minutes. Start with a small amount while you learn the flow, and keep your main savings exactly where they live today.

Once you arrive, everything feels familiar. DeFi apps, swaps, and NFTs run the same way, with the same buttons. The difference you notice is the price tag on each transaction and the speed of every confirmation.

06What it means for you

Layer 2s are where crypto turns usable for everyday life. Friends split dinner bills, artists sell directly to fans, and games run smoothly, all on networks that settle back to Ethereum's security.

Start with one network that carries an app you already like. Bridge a small amount, try a swap or a payment, and feel the difference for yourself. The main chain stays the vault. The Layer 2s are where you live, spend, and play.
