What is DePIN?
Your balcony could run part of a wireless network. Your dashcam could help build a map. DePIN, short for decentralized physical infrastructure networks, is the idea that everyday people build and run real world networks instead of big companies, and tokens reward them for it. Here is how it works.

01The idea: people power the network
Think of the cell towers on your block. A big company paid to build them, owns them, and bills you every month. DePIN flips that picture. DePIN stands for decentralized physical infrastructure networks, which is a long way of saying real world networks run by everyday people. Instead of one company building everything, thousands of people each contribute one small piece: a wireless hotspot on a balcony, a mapping camera on a car dashboard, storage space on a spare hard drive.
Each piece is small. Together they become a network owned by everyone who contributes to it. The blockchain tracks who contributed what and settles the payments in tokens, so coordination runs on shared code anyone can inspect.
02Wireless built by neighbors
Helium proved the idea in 2019. Hosts bought small radios and placed them in homes and offices, and together those radios built a wireless network for low power devices like pet trackers and city sensors. The hosts earned tokens for the coverage they provided, and users paid for data in tokens too.

04Compute and energy for everyone
Artificial intelligence runs on graphics chips, and those chips are scarce. Render lets people rent out idle GPU power to artists and researchers who need it, and pays them in tokens. Your gaming card can fund your hobby while you sleep.
Energy projects do the same with solar panels and batteries, rewarding homes that feed power back when the grid needs it most. Wherever an asset sits idle, a DePIN project can put it to work, and the owner earns a share of the value it creates.
05Token incentives: the reason people plug in
The token is the glue. Networks pay contributors in tokens for verified useful work, and the people who use the network pay with the same tokens. More contributors mean better coverage, better coverage attracts more users, and more users give the tokens real purpose.
