The mempool: where your transaction waits

Before a bitcoin transaction joins a block, it waits in the mempool, the network's shared waiting room. Here is how that waiting room works, why some transactions wait longer than others, and how to use that knowledge every time you send.

01A waiting room with open doors

Every full node keeps its own mempool: a list of valid transactions that have been announced and are still waiting for a block. Your wallet broadcasts your transaction to its peers. They check the rules, valid signatures and coins still unspent, and when everything checks out they keep a copy and pass it along. Within seconds your transaction sits in mempools around the world, waiting for a miner to pick it up.

The mempool lives across the network instead of in one place: thousands of nodes each hold their own copy of the waiting room.

02Why the line forms

Bitcoin blocks arrive roughly every ten minutes, and each block has limited room. When many people send at once, more transactions wait than fit in the next block, so a line forms. Quiet periods clear the line fast. Busy periods stretch it out.

The line is measured in megabytes of waiting transactions, and you can watch it grow and shrink in real time. A long line is a sign of a busy network, and busy networks are doing exactly what they were built to do.

03Fees are how the line moves

Miners choose which transactions to include, and they naturally pick the ones paying the most. So every transaction carries a fee, priced as a rate per unit of transaction size. A higher rate boards sooner. A lower rate boards later.

Wallets suggest a rate based on how busy the line is right now, so most senders simply accept the suggestion and go. The rate is your choice: pay for speed when the moment matters, pay less when time is on your side.

The mempool is the network's waiting room. Every full node keeps a list of valid transactions that have been announced and are still awaiting a block. Once a miner includes your transaction in a block, it leaves the mempool and becomes part of the chain.
