Bitcoin, scaled

Bitcoin Layer 2s.

Bitcoin's base layer stays rock solid while faster networks build on top: Lightning for payments, Stacks and Rootstock for apps. Here is the full Layer 2 map, in plain language.

01Why bitcoin needs layers

Bitcoin's base layer is deliberately conservative: about seven transactions per second, with security as the only priority. That design kept the network running flawlessly for over fifteen years, and nobody wants to gamble with it.

Layers solve the dilemma. Keep the base rock solid, and build faster systems on top that inherit its security. The base layer stays the vault. The upper layers become the bustling marketplace.

02Lightning: instant payments

The Lightning Network is bitcoin's payment layer. Two people open a channel, transact instantly and nearly free as many times as they like, and only settle the final balance on the base chain. Thousands of payments can flow through a single onchain transaction.

Lightning already powers real commerce, from tipping creators to remittances that arrive in seconds. It is the clearest proof that bitcoin scales in layers, not by changing the foundation.

03Stacks and Rootstock: smart contracts

Stacks brings smart contracts to bitcoin. Apps written in its Clarity language settle to the Bitcoin chain, letting developers build DeFi and NFTs anchored to bitcoin's security. Its sBTC design even lets bitcoin itself move inside Stacks apps.

Rootstock takes a different road: a merge mined sidechain fully compatible with Ethereum's tools, so developers can port their apps and use bitcoin for fees. Two philosophies, one goal: make bitcoin programmable without touching the base layer.

04New ideas: BitVM and friends

BitVM opened fresh possibilities by showing how complex contracts can run with minimal changes to bitcoin itself. Builders are now exploring rollups, validity proofs and trust minimized bridges that could bring Ethereum style scaling to bitcoin.

The research frontier moves fast, and every breakthrough follows the same principle: innovate above, preserve below. Bitcoin's conservatism is the feature that makes the experimentation safe.

05Choosing your lane

Use the base layer for savings and large transfers, where maximum security matters most. Reach for Lightning when you want instant, tiny payments. Explore Stacks or Rootstock when you want apps and DeFi denominated in bitcoin.

01What is a Bitcoin Layer 2?

A network built on top of bitcoin that handles transactions faster or adds features like smart contracts, while anchoring its security to the Bitcoin base chain. Lightning, Stacks and Rootstock are the leading examples.

02Is the Lightning Network a Layer 2?

Yes, the original one. It moves payments off the base chain into channels that settle instantly and cheaply, then records only the final balances onchain. It is bitcoin's payment scaling layer.

03What is Stacks?

A smart contract layer for bitcoin. Developers write apps in the Clarity language, transactions settle to the Bitcoin chain, and sBTC lets bitcoin itself move inside Stacks DeFi.

04What is Rootstock?

A merge mined sidechain compatible with Ethereum's developer tools, using bitcoin for fees. Developers can port Ethereum apps to a bitcoin secured environment.

05Do Layer 2s change bitcoin itself?

That is the beauty: they do not have to. Layers innovate above the base chain while the foundation stays conservative and secure. New features arrive without risking what already works.
