Deutsche Bank Just Scheduled Its Bitcoin Custody Debut for Late 2026
Germany's largest bank just put a date on its crypto arrival. Deutsche Bank announced on September 16 that it plans to launch a digital asset custody service for institutional and corporate clients in Europe by the end of 2026, pending completion of the applicable regulatory checks. The initial asset set is deliberate, opening with Bitcoin, Ether, and a limited selection of stablecoins and e money tokens, including USDC, EURC, and EURAU.
The target clients read like a guest list for European finance, spanning corporates, asset managers, hedge funds, custodians, brokers, and sovereign institutions served by the bank's Corporate Bank and Investment Bank. Retail customers sit outside the plan, which is itself a statement about where the bank sees the strongest demand. The bank will take over administration of clients' wallets and private keys, letting institutions hold digital assets and transfer them to third parties while building zero custody infrastructure of their own. Safeguards include hardware based key protection, approvals by several people, separate warm and cold storage environments, and backup and recovery controls.
This has been years in the making rather than a sudden pivot. Deutsche Bank applied to Germany's BaFin for a digital asset custody license in 2023 and entered a global partnership with Swiss infrastructure provider Taurus that September to integrate technology for cryptocurrency custody, digital currencies, and tokenized assets. Reporting places Bitpanda's technology unit in the project since July 2025. Tokenized financial instruments sit on the roadmap, with the asset range expected to expand over time as client demand, compliance controls, and regulators allow.
The angle worth savoring is the choice of custody over trading. Deutsche Bank is entering crypto as a vault built for holding and moving assets rather than speculating on them. Gerald Podobnik, co head of the bank's Corporate Bank, frames digital assets as a complement to the traditional financial system, new rails coexisting with existing market infrastructure. The regulatory tailwinds are real. The European Union's MiCA framework is in force, and in the United States the replacement of SAB 121 with SAB 122 removed key accounting barriers for banks holding client crypto. Standard Chartered and BBVA already offer regulated crypto custody in Europe, so Deutsche Bank is joining a race that is already well underway. When the largest bank in Germany offers to hold your private keys, custody has officially become a mainstream product line, and Europe's largest institutions are the first in line as customers.
