Unity Ran Its Game Inside Unreal Engine, and Both Engines Won
At Unite Seoul 2026, Unity pulled off the demonstration that would have sounded like a prank three years ago. The company ran Fantasy Kingdom, a project built with its own engine, in real time inside an Unreal Engine environment. This was a fully functional integration, captured live rather than faked for video. The game was simulated in Unity while Unreal Engine handled the rendering, with physics, lighting, controls and interactions synchronized between the two engines. An Unreal character moved through a Unity built world, every system talking to every other system, live.
James Stone, Unity's senior director of technical product management, walked the audience through what they were seeing: a game simulated in Unity and rendered in Unreal, everything happening in real time, an Unreal character moving through a Unity world with physics, lighting and controls synchronized between both engines. The technical achievement underneath is substantial: two fundamentally different engine architectures, stepping in lockstep, frame after frame. The bridge between them is PolySpatial, a protocol designed to transfer scene data, object positions, animations, movements and interactions between Unity and Unreal.
The demo is the first major fruit of the historic partnership Unity and Epic Games announced in November 2025, aimed at bringing Unity developed games into Fortnite as experiences within its metaverse. Epic CEO Tim Sweeney has argued since the Unreal Engine 6 announcement that the future of graphics engines lies in a collaborative ecosystem where the major players build together, enriching Fortnite with new experiences. He reacted to the Seoul demo on social media with a short message that doubled as a manifesto: "Connect all the engines!" Sweeney has long maintained that the value of connecting everything outweighs the value of remaining separate.
The backstory makes the handshake remarkable. Unity endured a genuine ordeal in 2023 when a proposed per installation runtime fee provoked intense backlash and a rapid reversal, followed by a change of leadership. The company has spent the years since rebuilding developer trust, and a deep technical collaboration with its fiercest rival is the loudest possible statement that the rebuild worked. Unity also used the Seoul event to announce Unity 7, arriving in 2027 with rendering, monetization and collaboration improvements plus a protocol for connecting generative AI programming agents. Early access to the official Unity integration with Fortnite arrives in 2027, with the first Unreal Engine 6 previews expected by the end of that year.
For developers, the message is liberating. The engine wars that defined the last decade are giving way to an interoperable era where the best simulation tech and the best rendering tech can live in the same frame. If you build games, start thinking in terms of ecosystems rather than allegiances; the tools are about to reward the teams that mix and match. And if you play them, expect the metaverse's walls to keep getting thinner. "Connect all the engines" is starting to sound less like a slogan and more like a release schedule.
