Binance Is Taking the Forex Market Around the Clock
The world's largest crypto exchange is coming for the world's largest market. Binance announced on September 18 that it will list its first foreign exchange perpetual futures contract, USDBRLUSDT, tracking the US dollar against the Brazilian real. The contract goes live on September 21 at 14:00 UTC, settles in USDT, trades around the clock, and offers up to 100x leverage.
The technical heart of the product is its weekend pricing. From Sunday 17:00 ET through Friday 17:00 ET, the index updates every second as a weighted average of quotes from outside data vendors. On weekends and public holidays, when traditional FX liquidity thins, Binance switches to an orderbook based pricing mode that keeps the contract tradable at all hours. Funding settles every eight hours, and the contract supports multi asset mode so traders can draw on a wider pool of collateral.
Binance's Head of Exchange and Trading, Shunyet Jan, framed the launch as a natural extension of the exchange's liquidity, saying the venue is strongly positioned to carry continuous price discovery into the hours traditional FX leaves uncovered, giving traders one place to express macro views, hedge exposure, and capture opportunity around the clock.
The data behind the bet is striking. Binance Research found that by April, the exchange's gold perpetuals were already showing institutional grade weekend price discovery, with weekend price movements correctly predicting the direction of Monday's opening gap about 89 percent of the time. In mid September, Binance's equity perpetuals linked to AI and semiconductors became the primary live venue for expressing views before Wall Street reopened, capturing about 53 percent of combined weekend volume across five major venues for the most directly linked AI contracts and about 59 percent for the most exposed semiconductor contracts.
Binance has company in the push. Kraken launched FX perpetuals in April 2025 covering the euro, British pound, Australian dollar, Japanese yen, and Swiss franc at up to 50x leverage, and reported $5.7 billion in FX spot volume in the first part of 2025. Less than two weeks before Binance's announcement, Bybit introduced 24/7 perpetuals tracking EUR/USD, GBP/USD, and USD/JPY, settled in USDT at up to 100x leverage.
For readers, the takeaway is structural. Crypto exchanges spent a decade building the machinery for markets that trade continuously, and that machinery is now spreading to foreign exchange. The forex market already runs 24 hours a day, five days a week; Binance is filling the two days it leaves dark. Weekend price discovery is becoming crypto's signature export to traditional finance, and the real's contract is only the first pair.
