Kojima Closed Xbox's Tokyo Show With a Casting Reveal
Hideo Kojima saved his biggest surprise for the end of Xbox's Tokyo Game Show broadcast, and for the first signal of where his future lives. Appearing in the show's closing 'one more thing' moment on September 17, Kojima announced that Swedish actor Bill Skarsgård will play the lead in Physint, the action espionage game Kojima Productions describes as the crowning project of his forty years in games. The reveal included a new poster, photographed by Kojima himself, showing Skarsgård alongside Charlee Fraser under the tagline 'The Next Cold War Begins.'
The casting choice carries real weight. Skarsgård broke through internationally as Pennywise in It and It Chapter Two and drew wide acclaim more recently for Nosferatu, and Kojima said the two are longtime admirers of each other's work. 'I am delighted to confirm the lead role for Physint will be Bill Skarsgård,' Kojima said in the announcement. 'The costume fittings, scans, and camera tests we conducted with Bill and Charlee earlier this year gave me tremendous confidence in the direction of the project.' He joins a cast that already includes Don Lee, Minami Hamabe, and Fraser, with Yoji Shinkawa returning as character and mechanical art designer.
The venue was the statement. Just days earlier, PlayStation had ended its publishing deal for Physint, and Microsoft moved in to publish the game. Kojima used Xbox's stage, during a broadcast celebrating 25 years of Xbox and more than 20 years in Japan, to put the new partnership on display: the first project update since the switch, closed with a movie star. Xbox added that the collaboration extends beyond games into film and television.
The rest of the broadcast showed what Xbox's Japan playbook looks like in practice: 17 gameplay reveals built around Asian studios. Call of Duty Modern Warfare 4 got a campaign trailer ahead of its October 23 launch. Fallout 76's Slasher update is available now. Serenity Forge premiered Faraday Blues, a surreal science fiction adventure with 64 endings that rewrite reality. Netmarble showed Bloomwalker, now officially part of the Ni No Kuni universe. Sega revealed Japan as a location in Crazy Taxi World Tour. Persona 4 Revival introduced Naoto Shirogane ahead of its February 18, 2027 release, and Shape of Dreams launched the same day on Game Pass.
For players, the takeaway is a release calendar with real texture: a horror update today, a shooter in October, a Persona remake in February, and a spy epic with a movie star attached. For the industry, the takeaway is simpler: the most coveted creator in games just chose his stage, and he chose Tokyo.
