DeFi Grew a Privacy Layer for Big Money: Zama's 16 Confidential Vaults
Institutions have watched DeFi's yields from the sidelines for one blunt reason: every position, balance, and strategy sat visible to competitors and front runners. This week that reason started dissolving. Confidentiality protocol Zama opened deposits into 16 confidential vaults on Morpho across Ethereum, paired with a swap protocol that keeps trade sizes and intent private. DeFi finally learned how to keep a secret.
The numbers show the demand was waiting. Zama's first confidential vault, built with Morpho and Steakhouse Financial around Steakhouse's USDC Prime strategy, launched in June and grew from zero to $40 million in total value locked within seven weeks. That proof of concept unlocked the expansion: 16 vaults across five asset classes, USDC, USDT, AUSD, TGBP, and WBTC, curated by Steakhouse Financial, Armitage by Wintermute, Flowdesk, RockawayX, and Bitwise. The climb from zero to $40 million happened through quiet deposits, which is exactly how institutional products prove themselves.
Twelve of the vaults mirror existing public Morpho vaults, letting depositors take the same strategies private; the other four were built specifically for confidential deposits. Alongside the vaults, the Zama Swap Protocol went live, enabling swaps among confidential assets like cUSDC, cUSDT, cAUSD, and cTGBP, plus shares in the confidential vaults, while keeping both the size of each transaction and the intent behind it private.
Zama's framing cuts to the structural point. The team explained that on public blockchains, positions, balances, and strategies sit visible to competitors and front runners, a structural barrier to institutional deployment at scale. Confidential vaults let institutional allocators, corporate treasuries, and active market participants earn diversified onchain yield while keeping their holdings and strategies private. Morpho cofounder Merlin Egalite added that the expansion scales confidential DeFi efficiently and opens new possibilities for allocators onchain, with the strategy, the liquidity, and the profile unchanged.
Distribution is widening fast. The vaults went live first through Zama's own app, with Utila, Zerion Wallet, and Yield.xyz set to add them in the coming weeks. Each integration multiplies the surfaces where private yield becomes a tap away rather than an engineering project. With Utila, Zerion Wallet, and Yield.xyz adding support soon, the vaults will sit inside tools institutions already use.
The same cryptography that guards private messages now guards fund strategies, and the institutions that sat out DeFi's first decade have one fewer excuse to keep waiting. Readers should expect the confidential share of onchain finance to grow quickly from here. Privacy is becoming DeFi's enterprise feature.
