Bond's Switch 2 Port Moved to March 2027, and That Is the Compliment

IO Interactive just gave Nintendo Switch 2 owners the best possible news disguised as a schedule change. On September 15, the studio confirmed that 007 First Light will arrive on the Switch 2 in March 2027, with the extra months devoted entirely to polishing the game's performance on Nintendo's handheld. A full year after the game was originally supposed to reach the console, IO is choosing craft over calendar, and Switch 2 players should take it as a compliment.

This is becoming the Switch 2's signature move, and it says something real about the hardware. Elden Ring went through the same process, with its Switch 2 version held until August 2026 for performance adjustments. The pattern is unmistakable: major studios now treat Nintendo's handheld as a platform that deserves the full experience, and they would rather spend the better part of a year optimizing than ship a compromised port. The age of the cut down handheld version is over; the Switch 2 gets the real game or it waits.

The wait is easier to understand against the scale of what First Light became. The game launched in May on Xbox, PlayStation, and PC after a two month polishing period, then sold more than a million copies in its first 24 hours and passed four million units by August. IO Interactive called it a reimagined origin story for Bond, and players agreed with their wallets. A success that large raises the stakes for every platform it touches: the Switch 2 version has to feel like the same triumph in handheld form.

Behind the schedule, a fascinating power story is unfolding. Amazon Games took over the publishing rights for all James Bond titles during First Light's development, a consequence of Amazon's 2021 acquisition of MGM. Head of Amazon Games Jeff Gattis told GamesIndustry.biz that a sequel will happen, adding, 'Technically, Amazon does own the rights to the game, but we're going to do what's right by the game... Given the success of this one, I think you probably want IOI developing it.' An Amazon spokesperson later clarified that it is still too early to discuss future projects while praising the relationship with IO. Translation: the IP sits with Amazon, the magic sits with IO, and everyone knows it.

IO has said it plans a trilogy of Bond games, which makes the Switch 2 version more than a port: it is the foundation of a handheld home for the whole saga. Getting the first entry right on the hardware sets the template for the next two. Ten months of additional polish now buys a decade of goodwill later, a trade any studio would make.

For players, the takeaway is simple and encouraging. The studios bringing their biggest games to the Switch 2 are treating your platform as a premiere destination, and they are willing to absorb the cost of extra development to prove it. March 2027 is a long wait, and it will be worth it: Bond deserves a proper entrance, and IO Interactive is making sure he gets one.
