The Network Is the AI: Intel Veterans Raise 100 Million to Fix the Real Bottleneck

The most valuable real estate in AI has moved out of the chip and into the wiring between chips. Delos Data, a startup founded by Intel veterans, announced Tuesday that it has raised 100 million dollars to build network chips and software that move data faster inside AI data centers, betting that the industry's next great bottleneck is communication.

The logic tracks the arc of the whole boom. The early data centers were walls of Nvidia GPUs stitched together with Nvidia's own networking. Then the workload changed: the game shifted from training giant models to running AI agents that field requests and carry out tasks on behalf of users, and suddenly the data center filled with a mix of silicon from Nvidia, AMD, Cerebras and others. Delos Data's pitch is beautifully simple: whatever mix of computing chips a data center owner chooses, now or in the future, its gear gets them talking to each other at full speed.

Pat Gelsinger, the former Intel CEO now investing through Playground, which joined the round alongside Matrix Partners, Socratic Partners, Capricorn, Matter Venture Partners, IAG and DYNAMIQ, framed the waste in vivid terms. Computing chips waiting for data, he said, are among the biggest wastes of money and energy in AI data centers: rooms full of hot hardware burning watts while twiddling their thumbs. The most expensive idle asset in the building is a GPU waiting on the network.

Chief technology officer and cofounder Dan Daly is refreshingly honest about the bet. Nobody knows what the infrastructure architecture for agentic AI will look like, he said in an interview, but Delos can provide the quickest way to move data around whatever it becomes. Inference workloads move data in patterns that today's interconnect was built for an earlier era to serve, so the company designed its network chips and software from the workload down to the silicon. Reuters notes that even Nvidia has started offering multiple kinds of computing chips, which only deepens the mix Delos is built to serve.

This is the maturation of an industry in one funding round. Phase one was hoarding compute. Phase two is making the compute actually productive, and productivity lives in the plumbing. The winners of the agentic era may well be the companies nobody's keynote mentions, the ones selling the roads instead of the cars.
