Shift Up's CTO Promises a Clear Wall Between 'Experimental Content' and the Game
Every time a Shift Up executive talks about AI, the story gets bigger. The latest chapter comes from chief technology officer DongKi Lee, who addressed the ongoing debate over a generative AI music video for Evie, the protagonist of the upcoming Stellar Blade: Blood Rain, in an interview with The Gamer. The video, released in July, has overshadowed the game's big Summer Game Fest reveal, and Lee tried to split the difference between acknowledging fan concerns and defending the technology.
Lee's answer introduced a new vocabulary. He said the company takes fan concerns seriously, and promised a clear separation going forward between 'game related content' and 'experimental content,' the category the AI music video now belongs to. The line is meant to reassure players that experiments stay outside the game. On social media it became a punchline within hours, with one commenter joking that the next controversial post will simply be labeled experimental.
The substance of Lee's position is that generative AI should serve developers rather than replace them. AI has a lot of influence on game development, he said, and what matters is the direction and purpose the tools serve: used in a way that supports developers' creativity, know how, and skills, with the purpose of making a great, high quality game. It is a more measured statement than chief executive Kim Hyung Tae's earlier defense this summer, when he argued the AI was rendering and presenting Evie based on the data, designs, and craftsmanship the team created, rather than creating her from scratch.
Fans remain unconvinced by the distinction. Some say an explicit commitment to keep generative AI out of Blood Rain is the only statement that will satisfy them, while others point out that a proper trailer, like the kind every game company makes, would have avoided the whole episode. The measured tone has yet to cool the conversation, and Shift Up shows every sign of keeping AI firmly in the toolbox.
The lesson for readers is about language. 'Experimental content' is now an official category in game marketing, invented to create distance between a studio and its own output. Words can buy time, but only the work earns trust. When Blood Rain ships, players will compare the promise with the product, frame by frame. That comparison, measured in shipped work, decides whether the separation holds.
