Europe's Newest Unicorn Guards the Machines: Exein's 270 Million Bet on Physical AI
Europe has a new unicorn, and it guards the machines. Italian startup Exein just raised a 270 million dollar round led by Headline at a 1.7 billion dollar valuation, a thirty fold climb since its Series B about two years ago, on the promise of a cybersecurity layer for physical AI. The round was significantly oversubscribed.
The concept is disarmingly direct. CEO Gianni Cuozzo told TechCrunch that every device should be able to defend itself, regardless of the network it sits on. Exein's latest product, Photon, is a runtime security solution that stops attacks at the kernel level of the device itself. The company has worked directly with manufacturers and silicon vendors since its founding in Rome in 2018, a slow partnership strategy that is now paying off enormously: Exein says it has secured more than 2 billion connected devices across aerospace, industrial automation, automotive manufacturing, energy, healthcare and semiconductors.
Physical AI is the tailwind. The same supply chain that builds connected devices now builds AI powered robots, drones, self driving cars, sensors and smart appliances running models on the edge, and Exein's technology covers all of them. Cuozzo says the company is growing 400 percent year on year, with half its revenue already coming from Asia Pacific, and the fresh funding goes toward acquisitions and hiring to accelerate expansion across the United States and Asia.
The threat side is accelerating too. Open source models that run with light guardrails have made it cheaper and easier to target physical devices in novel ways, and Exein reports a rise in what Cuozzo calls machine speed attacks. The company's answer is a foundational model for physical AI security, currently training on machine data and telemetry, planned for the first quarter of 2027. Regulation is pushing the same direction: the European Union's Cyber Resilience Act, whose reporting obligations kicked off last week, comes into full force in December 2027 and requires manufacturers to make sure all digital products are safe from cyber threats.
The deeper story is geographic. While American capital chases foundation models and Chinese labs chase scale, Europe is quietly building the trust layer: the security, compliance and resilience infrastructure that physical AI needs before it touches factories, hospitals and highways. A 1.7 billion dollar valuation says the market sees it.
For readers, Exein is a preview of where AI value migrates next. The models were phase one. The machines are phase two, and every machine needs a immune system. The companies building those immune systems are about to have a very good decade.
