GameStop Is Reopening Stores, and Physical Retail Is Writing Its Second Act
GameStop is reopening stores. After years of closures and cost discipline that shrank the chain dramatically, the company announced on social media that select closed stores would begin reopening on September 11, with a Brooklyn, Ohio location confirmed among the first. The punchline of the meme stock era is becoming a retail story again.
The insiders are putting their own money behind the turn. CEO Ryan Cohen purchased one million shares on September 10 at a weighted average price of about 20.38 dollars, a buy worth roughly 20.4 million dollars, according to federal regulatory filings. Board member Alain Attal added 5,000 shares for approximately 100,000 dollars the same day. Insider buying on this scale is a loud signal: the people with the best view of the business like what they see.
What they see is a different company than the one that sold discs. Collectibles, including trading cards, accounted for 45.1 percent of GameStop's net sales in the most recent quarter, up from roughly 29 percent for fiscal 2025. Collectibles sales grew 57 percent from the same quarter a year earlier. GameStop spent two years closing more than 1,300 stores; it is reopening as a place where physical culture lives, trading cards, figures and merch, with games alongside.
The timing is richer than it looks. As the industry goes increasingly digital, the physical store becomes a destination rather than a default, a place for the tangible side of gaming culture that downloads leave untouched. Trading card culture is booming, midnight launches still draw crowds, and a generation raised on digital storefronts is discovering the pleasure of the physical object. GameStop's second act is built on everything the digital transition left behind.
There is a lesson here for every retailer pronounced finished in the age of the download. GameStop stopped trying to win the old game and started playing a new one, then put capital behind the pivot. Cohen's 20 million dollar buy says the transformation has further to run. Reopening stores is the most expensive sentence a retailer can utter, and companies only say it when the math works.
For players, the return of the neighborhood game store is worth celebrating on its own terms. Some experiences only happen in person: the trade binder spread across the counter, the launch night crowd, the shelf you browse with your eyes instead of a search bar. Digital gave gaming infinite shelf space. Physical is giving it a home again, one reopened store at a time.
