Factory Just Raised 200 Million Dollars at a 5 Billion Dollar Valuation to Build the Software Factory

Factory, a San Francisco startup building AI agents for enterprise engineering teams, said Tuesday it raised 200 million dollars at a 5 billion dollar valuation. The round more than tripled the company's valuation from 1.5 billion dollars in April, when it last raised 150 million dollars. Backers include Blackstone, Khosla Ventures, Sequoia Capital, Insight Partners, Evantic Capital and Sound Ventures, with Salesforce chief executive Marc Benioff and investor Brad Gerstner joining as angel investors.

The money is chasing a shift in how companies use coding AI. Factory's pitch is that the era of the individual coding assistant is giving way to something bigger: software factories, whole AI driven engineering organizations that build, test and maintain code as the foundation a software company runs on. "Across the world's largest enterprises, we are seeing a move from individual coding agents to software factories that serve as the core foundation from which an entire software company operates," cofounder and chief executive Matan Grinberg told Reuters. Factory, founded in 2023 by Grinberg and Eno Reyes, sells its Droid agents to enterprises as an AI developer rather than a helper for individual engineers.

Here is the fresh angle most coverage is missing: Factory is selling independence as a feature. The coding agent market has turned into a feud between labs. SpaceX completed a 60 billion dollar acquisition of Cursor in August, and weeks later OpenAI said it would end its contract with Cursor in November, cutting Cursor users off from OpenAI's models. Grinberg's message to big customers is that they deserve a partner built for the long term, above the feuds between labs. Factory's Droids are model agnostic, and Grinberg says the company will stay independent of the labs so users keep access to every model.

The timing tells you how hot this lane is. Cognition, Factory's closest rival, raised 2 billion dollars at a 48 billion dollar valuation earlier this month. Coinbase and Block are reshaping their workforces around AI productivity gains. Investors have moved past asking whether AI writes code. They are asking who owns the factory that writes it.

For readers building software, the takeaway is structural. The coding assistant was act one. Act two is the AI engineering organization, and the winners will be the platforms that stay neutral ground while the labs compete. Watch which enterprises standardize on independent agent platforms this year. That choice will shape how software gets built for the next decade.
