Ethereum Just Posted Its Busiest Quarter Ever, With Fewer Humans in the Room
Ethereum processed 203.9 million transactions in the second quarter of 2026, an all time high, according to Token Terminal data reported this week. Throughput hit a record 25.9 transactions per second, up 68.4 percent from the same quarter last year. Fees rose 31.6 percent to 52.5 million dollars, and the amount of ether permanently burned more than doubled to 17.1 million dollars, with roughly one third of all fees removed from supply.
Here is the detail that makes the quarter historic rather than merely strong: monthly active users fell 30 percent from the previous quarter. The network set records for activity while fewer people logged in. Token holder addresses, meanwhile, averaged 312.1 million, up 27.4 percent year over year. More addresses holding, more transactions flowing, fewer humans clicking.
The simplest explanation is also the most important one for the next decade: software is becoming the user. Automated agents, trading systems, payment rails and on chain programs transact around the clock on behalf of people who rarely open a wallet interface. Ethereum is increasingly the settlement layer for machine to machine commerce, and the second quarter numbers are the first clean statistical portrait of that shift.
The economics follow the activity. Higher throughput with rising fees and accelerating burn means the network is capturing more value from its usage, a flywheel where demand for chain capacity translates directly into scarcity for ether holders. With layer 2 networks like Base and Robinhood Chain building on Ethereum's foundation, the main chain increasingly functions as the secure base layer for an expanding stack of faster execution environments.
For ether holders and builders alike, the takeaway is a new way to read network health: user counts tell you about the past, transaction counts tell you about the future. A chain that grows busier as its human audience consolidates is a chain being adopted by systems, and systems transact at a scale beyond human reach. The agentic economy needs neutral, always on settlement. This quarter, Ethereum proved it is already providing it.
