PlayStation Dropped Kojima's Physint, Xbox Caught It, and the Engine Is the Real Story
PlayStation is stepping away from Physint, Hideo Kojima's action espionage game, and Xbox has picked it up. PlayStation announced the move on September 10. Kojima revealed that the studio received the cancellation notice in the middle of June and spent three months finding a new partner. Xbox CEO Asha Sharma said the company is honored Kojima chose Xbox, and the collaboration will extend across film and television as well.
Reporting from Bloomberg's Jason Schreier points to budget concerns, missed deadlines, and doubts about commercial performance. Neither Death Stranding nor Death Stranding 2 met PlayStation's revenue expectations, and PlayStation was reluctant to fund another massive Kojima project that would eventually arrive on other platforms, following the pattern of both Death Stranding games.
Here is the angle everyone is missing: the engine. Physint was being built on Decima, the Guerrilla Games engine that Kojima Productions helped refine over nearly a decade, turning it into the technology behind Death Stranding's celebrated visuals. Forbes reporting indicates the studio may lose access to Decima entirely, forcing a move to Unreal Engine 5 or a new proprietary engine, a pivot that adds serious time and cost to a game already years from release.
The dynamic is rich. Kojima's team improved Decima for Sony's own projects, and now engine access is leverage in the split. Meanwhile OD, Kojima's horror project, already runs on Unreal Engine 5 with Xbox publishing, so both of his upcoming games now sit with Microsoft.
The project had been positioned as a fusion of games and film. Xbox now says its own collaboration extends across film and television too, a sign that Kojima's transmedia ambitions survive the publisher change. Where the cameras roll matters less than that they keep rolling.
Forbes reporting frames the Decima question as the biggest open one: whether Kojima Productions keeps access to the engine it helped perfect, or rebuilds on Unreal Engine 5 alongside OD. An engine switch on a project of this scale is measured in years, with the team cost to match.
Industry reaction has been strong. Many fans celebrated the Xbox rescue as a better fit for Kojima's ambitions, with several commentators arguing that PlayStation's cautious greenlighting cost it the industry's most distinctive director. The project is estimated to be five to six years from release, giving the new partnership plenty of runway.
For players, the takeaway is about who owns the tools. Whoever controls the engine controls the timeline, the budget, and the game's future. Kojima kept his project alive by changing publishers. Keeping his engine will be the harder fight.
