Cognition Just Hit a 48 Billion Dollar Valuation on the Back of Its AI Software Engineer
AI coding startup Cognition is now worth 48 billion dollars. The company announced on September 8 that it raised over 2 billion dollars in a Series E round led by Andreessen Horowitz and Accel, with Founders Fund, General Catalyst, and Avenir alongside. The valuation nearly doubles the 26 billion dollar figure from May, when Cognition raised over 1 billion dollars.
The engine behind that number is Devin, the autonomous coding agent Cognition introduced in 2024. Run rate revenue has grown from 492 million dollars to almost 900 million since May, and Devin now works inside engineering teams at Nvidia on chip design, GE Aerospace on aviation, Citi on financial services, Mercedes-Benz on automotive, and Modal on AI infrastructure.
Devin does more than write code. It plans, writes, tests, and deploys with limited human intervention, and newer proactive workflows let it act before anyone asks. Devin Auto-Triage takes a first pass at incident investigation, Devin Security Swarm finds and triages vulnerabilities, and Devin Automations kicks off work from events in Slack, GitHub, and Linear.
The company's own framing is the era of self driving software, where human engineers act as architects setting goals and priorities while swarms of agents carry out the execution. Cognition also owns the Windsurf AI coding editor and has opened offices in Washington, Tokyo, Singapore, London, São Paulo, and Madrid in the past year, expanding the infrastructure behind the agent workforce.
Cognition is riding a wider wave. Hyperscaler AI spending could reach about 3 percent of US GDP annually from 2027 to 2029, according to Reuters Breakingviews, and much of that flows into the coding and data infrastructure that agents like Devin run on. The companies selling picks and shovels to the agent era are starting to be priced like it.
The expansion into new offices across six cities in the past year shows where the business is going: selling agents to enterprises everywhere, with local teams to onboard them. Windsurf gives Cognition the editor where developers meet the agents, closing the loop from code writing to deployment.
The big players are watching the same future. Tech stocks surged as the AI spending cycle widened, and venture capital keeps crowding into companies that can turn agent demos into real revenue. Cognition is one of the few proving that crossing, with nearly a billion dollars in run rate revenue to show for it.
For working engineers, the message is direct. The coding agent is becoming a teammate, and the developers who learn to direct swarms of them are about to become the most valuable people in the building.
