How a Bitcoin Miner Became Anthropic's Landlord in a 35 Billion Dollar AI Deal
The most telling deal of the AI buildout runs through a bitcoin miner. Anthropic agreed to a $35 billion cloud computing deal with Lambda, a cloud provider backed by Nvidia, for capacity at Hut 8's Beacon Point campus in Nueces County, Texas, first reported by the Wall Street Journal on August 31. Nvidia itself will hold the lease on the data center. The structure is almost perfectly circular: an Nvidia backed AI developer rents from an Nvidia backed cloud provider, in an Nvidia leased building full of Nvidia chips that Lambda buys from Nvidia, its own investor.
The site tells the deeper story. Hut 8 disclosed in July that an unnamed high investment grade tenant signed two 15 year leases covering 704 megawatts of IT capacity at the Texas campus, a combined base term contract value of $19.6 billion, with the site offering up to 1 gigawatt of power and an existing grid connection. A bitcoin mining company is now one of the most important landlords in artificial intelligence, because in 2026, power contracts and grid access are the scarcest assets in tech.
This is one of several mega deals in Anthropic's capacity spree. The company separately agreed to spend $45 billion renting capacity from Nscale's West Virginia site, signed $50 billion in cloud commitments with neocloud Fluidstack, and struck a $45 billion deal with SpaceX. Lambda itself is in talks to raise as much as $3 billion at a valuation of up to $12 billion or more. Anthropic was racing to lock up compute after hitting a supply crunch earlier this year as Claude products gained traction.
Barron's labeled the Lambda deal the latest circular arrangement, and the pattern is plain to see: everyone in the chain is invested in everyone else. There is a builder's read too. When demand outruns supply this dramatically, capital finds the fastest path to electrons, and right now that path runs through former mining sites with power already wired. Hut 8 is even developing data centers for Anthropic that will house Google's tensor processing units, which compete with Nvidia's chips, with Google providing financial guarantees. The ecosystem is diversifying even as it concentrates.
For readers, the lesson is about where value accrues. The AI gold rush is minting fortunes for model labs and for whoever controls power, land, and grid connections. Texas megawatts are the new oil fields, and the miners who secured them early are cashing in twice: once on Bitcoin, once on the intelligence age. Follow the electrons and you will find the next decade's winners.
