Arm Wants Your Phone to Paint Game Worlds With AI

The chip inside your next phone could draw game worlds the way a concept artist sketches, with AI filling in the fine detail. Arm just introduced CSS for Mobile 2, a compute platform for smartphones built around a new graphics chip called the Mali G2 Ultra NX.

This is the first Mali GPU with neural accelerators built directly into the graphics pipeline. Working alongside traditional rendering, neural techniques reconstruct, enhance, and even generate visual detail on the fly. Arm calls the approach AI native graphics, and the promise is richer worlds, cinematic lighting, and smoother high resolution gameplay on a phone.

The numbers Arm quotes are bold. Neural graphics run at up to four times the performance per watt of the previous approach. Games that use none of the new AI features still run up to 14 percent faster than on the last generation chip. A new execution engine and a third generation ray tracing unit take on complex lighting and the features modern game engines expect.

The timing is spicy because Qualcomm is charging down the same path. Its Adreno Neural Fusion graphics also plant AI hardware inside the mobile GPU. Arm tucks neural accelerators inside each shader core, sharing memory and cache with everyday graphics work. Qualcomm uses dedicated matrix cores in each processing slice with a large local cache. Both designs move far less data around than older split designs did. Which one puts more frames on screen per watt in a real phone is a question independent testing of shipping devices will settle.

Developers are already signing on. Tencent is building Arm Neural Technology into its Magic Dawn engine efforts, Unity China is doing the same with the Tuanjie Engine, and Sumo Digital created a demo called Neural Dawn to show what the hardware can do. NetEase plans an NSS enabled version of Where Winds Meet for players this year, and Tencent Arena Breakout Infinite plus Infold Games Infinity Nikki are integrating the technology too.

Under the silicon sits a cultural split. GamesBeat noted the announcement courted developers in China, where studios welcome AI tooling with open arms, while many Western developers meet generative AI with folded arms, protective of craft and ownership. Arm seems to be reading the room. This AI lives in the GPU and paints prettier pixels instead of replacing artists, a pitch designed to win over skeptics.

For your pocket, the upshot is delightfully concrete. The phone you already carry is about to run games that look closer to console quality while treating your battery gently. Mobile gaming is done being the little sibling of the hobby.
